Songs about telephones

Songs about phones have been around since the 60's and the earliest on the list was still being played live by the writer two years ago!

That's 50 years of musicians writing about phones: writing about connecting, getting back in touch, love and breaking up. Looking through the list it's easy to see how much the way we use phones to communicate has changed (we looked at how finding people had changed recently).

1970's

Glenn Campbell - Wichita Lineman - 1968

This ones about a 'lineman, working for the county'

There's a huge number of versions of this (and you should probably listen to all of them) but here he is, on Jools, laughing his way through the song, and playing a very nice solo as well.

Kraftwerk - Telephone Call - 1986

Ok, it takes a while for the lyrics to kick in, and lots of bleeping phone noises until they do, but this classic Kraftwerk track talks about how distance is diminished by a phone: 'You're so close but far away'.

1990's

De La Soul - Ring Ring Ring - 1991

Released in 1991 from the album De La Soul is dead' this could't be more about phones if it tried. The guitar riff is also sampled from Help is on the way' by The Whatanauts.

2000's

While mobile phone technology was available in the 70's and the the first commercially available phone was released in 1983 (it cost $4000!), they don't really appear in our list until now as commercial phones like the Nokia 6110 and Motorola Star Tac weren't available until the late 90's.
