Welcome to GGBC

The Goring Gap Boat Club is one of the largest recreational boating clubs in the Thames valley.

Membership is open to all, from youngsters gaining their first rowing experience to veterans with a life time on the river. Beginners are assured of a warm welcome, and a relaxed and safe introduction to the sport. No previous experience is required, and we provide tuition to all our new members.

The clubs' aims are simple - "...to make it possible for members to enjoy un-powered boating....". Over the years it's estimated that 1500 rowers have taken to the water under the guidance of GGBC, many of them competing in the ever popular Goring and Streatley Regatta.

The centrepiece of the club's activity is the annual Goring and Streatley Regatta, which combines fun racing (for all the family) with live entertainment, a fun fair, food, craft fairs and much more. It's a 'not to be missed' event with some 600 rowers competing and a crowd of over 5000 people. A great atmosphere for competing and a superb day out for all the family.

Make a note in your diary now - Saturday 18th July 2009

With the increased interest in rowing as both a leisure pursuit and a competitive sport GGBC has made strides towards providing some great facilities. Recent arrivals have been a superb coaching / safety launch, 4 brand new sculls, and a double gig. We've also purchased the less exotic items....cox box, blades etc that make everyone's rowing a better experience. See the Rowing page.

All are welcome to come along and try their hand at rowing .... it's great to be out on the river keeping fit, meeting new friends and enjoying the wonderful scenery. See the Membership page for full details.

If rowing sounds too much like hard work give the punts a go....

The club is currently based at the Oratory School boathouse  in Whitchurch on Thames, and also has facilities for punting at the Swan hotel in Streatley (ideal for a leisurely picnic with friends). We have a large range of boats available from single sculls to eights, the majority of our rowing being in stable fours and quad boats - ideal for getting to grips with the basics before moving on to the finer shells.

Round the Island Head - the every popular fun event.... a tough race against the clock. 10 minutes is a good time, sub 9 is superb. It's not just about rowing hard - this event has a unique turn at the half way stage... around the island.

Sunday 21st September 10am-2pm

Winning crew at the spring RTIH

The more crews the better - we draw names out of the hat for the fours races.... but for those who want to pursue a personnel bests in other boats we'll happily time you.

Hopefully we'll also encourage a few visiting crews to come along  and join the fun. An eights / octuple challenge on Pete's record time is definitely on  the cards.

BBQ will be fired up for lunch - bring some food to cook.

Touring Weekend - final call for members to join the fun of a day or two rowing the Thames and camping over night. We plan to row from Pangbourne up to the islands at Moulsford for an over night stay.

Dates - 23rd -25th August, we'll finalise the actual days once we know the crews preferences.

Two superb touring boats... so up to 8 places available.

May be you fancy punting up from Goring? - we have two punts at the Swan.... so it's just a gentle pole to the islands.

Let us know ASAP if you'd like to come along....

Swim test and Capsize Drill - if you row it's really important that you know you can swim confidently. If you scull capsize is not unknown..... so a practice to know what to expect is very important. We're hoping to arrange a pool session on -

Wednesday 27th August at Oratory school - 7-9pm.

If you'd like to take part drop us a line. BTW - it's great fun!

GOLD - superb effort by the GB 4-. At 1000km it looked worrying, at 1500m well in contention...and the final 500m awesome! A very proud moment for GB rowing - it's great to be a part of the sport.

Excellent row also by the double sculls.....the girls were so close to gold.

2012 just 4 years away.....want to give rowing a go? Email us

GGBC victorious at MRC - When Goring received an invite to row against some of Maidenheads elite oarsmen and women there were quite a few doubts as to how well our crews would cope against the 'big boys'. However we'd prepared meticulously, eaten our 5 portions of fruit and veg every day for a whole week.... and had some expert last minute coaching. The result - we picked up 4 Golds and a Silver......not bad for a scratch crew!

There were some very close races (less than a canvas). Everyone had a great time - fantastic hospitality from the guys and girl's from MRC. Particular thank you to Michael for organising the event - we all very much appreciate it.

Lets hope this is the start of a series of friendly battles between our clubs.

We're hoping MRC can make the famous GGBC ' Round the Island Head' in September.... we're expecting new records to be set for this gruelling event.

Corporate Rowing - How about considering the ultimate team building event? Both mentally and physically challenging, rowing is a great way to get everyone pulling together. See our Corporate Row page for full details.

Small Boats Tuesdays - despite the very wet and windy conditions we've had lots of sculls and pairs out over the last couple of weeks.... Snuffy, the wide stable gig has been very popular! It's never as bad as it seems when you're peering out the office window.... there's always a nice calm spell - just before the rain!

GGBC featured in Regatta & Rowing Mag - GGBC is showcased in the August 'Olympic' edition of the ARA's Magazine. We are the stars of the Club Spotlight feature.....a two page spread all about our fantastic boat club.

Learn2Scull - we were hoping to run another L2S course this August....but time has caught up with us and many people are off on holiday. However all is not lost - we'll be concentrating on sculling every Tuesday evening so there's a great opportunity to learn the basics and get some coaching for free! We even hope to get a swim test and capsize evening organised - an important safety session.... but also great fun!

The 'small boats Tuesdays' run through to September and start ~6:30pm. Why not come down and give it a go? You'll need to be a full GGBC member to take advantage....but at just £25 for new members it's got to be a bargain!

For more details please contact us.

Single Sculls Sponsored

One of the sponsored sculls on it's way to
victory at the Goring & Streatley regatta

The club would like to thank AVSI, Datasat Communications and Prolinx for their generous sponsorship of the club's brand new single sculls.

The 4 singles have proved a great success at the club - sculling is becoming increasingly popular at club sessions, so much so we've had to introduce 'Small boats Tuesdays' to cope with demand!

Many thank to our sponsors for helping with the purchase of sculling blades, and of course to Awards for All for the grant towards the purchase the sculls.

Want to know more about our exciting sponsorship opportunities? Please email for full details.

Corporate Learn2Row a great success - 7 hardworking employees from Johnson & Johnson took time out to learn some new water based skills. Rowing is a great way to enjoy the river and bring a team together working towards a common aim.

The course started with some formal tuition....but in no time everyone was on the ergs getting to grips with the basics and then out on the river in the stable restricted fours. Okay the first few strokes were a little wobbly, but in next to no time the crews went from rowing cautiously in pairs to confidently rowing as a four. There was even time to practice racing starts....something none of us would have imagined just an hour earlier!

The afternoon session was spent honing the new found skills in readiness for the day 1 racing....but first there was a 1 minute erg test.....won convincingly by one of the girls!

At GGBC we like to emphasis good technique as well as speed ....the minimal strokes over a set distance really showed the level of concentration and good accuracy acquired by both crews - a very impressive display! The final race was closely fought over a 300m course with neither crew making a serious mistake over the whole course. At the end of the day honours were even.

The Ethicon Biosurgical team

The victorious 4 winning the end of day race

Day two saw the weather take a turn for the worse... but undeterred everyone worked hard to make the best of the occasion. Rowing a fine eight was a great way to co-ordinate the whole crew .....and as the photos show they made short work of getting to grips with this much fine craft..

The winning 'minimal strokes crew in action'

The final session saw another change of craft - this time the coxed quads. Two oars rather than one proved a little daunting but after some initial confusion (and some expert coaching) the crews were soon flying along. The final battle of the day - skill exercises and a head to head racing.....both very close.

Everyone went home exhausted but happy....and slightly damp!

Many thanks to all the GGBC and OSBC members who helped out over the two days - you did a great job!

Perfect balance after only 30minutes....a superb achievement

The crew concentrating hard as they take their first few strokes in the 8+.......despite the unseasonal weather!
